A tiny village on the west coast of Jutland decides to stage "Hamlet" as an amateur comedy. The young gravedigger at the local cemetery, who doesn’t know who of the local men are his father, plays Hamlet, his own voluptuous mother also volunteers to be Hamlet’s mother, but there is nobody around to play Ofelia. Until finally a young woman on the run from a tough life in the city hides in their secluded village. Miraculously Shakespeare’s drama oozes into everyday life and changes the village for ever.
